Insurance Warning

Loss or damage of Hearing Aids

Usually, your hearing aids are covered by your house and contents insurance for loss or damage. Please contact your independent audiology clinic if you need to lodge an insurance claim for your hearing aid/s so that your clinic can help you with the claim.

Recently, Australian-owned IAG-branded insurance companies (AMI, State Insurance, NZI, and Lumley) and Triton Hearing (owned by Swiss corporate Sonova, the owners of Phonak and Unitron brands of hearing aids) have signed a deal. This means that if you lodge a claim for hearing aids you will be rung by a Triton hearing employee and directed to them for a replacement.

They will identify themselves as the “Insurance Response Team”, but are, in fact, working for Triton Hearing. Under the Code of Health and Disability Rights, you have the right to choose your audiology provider, and do not have to change away from your existing provider. You also have the right to be free from harassment under this same Code.

Members of Independent Audiologists NZ and like-minded New Zealand clinics are trying to have this approach overturned. We understand that hearing loss does not get better; and we value our long-standing relationships with our patients, which can span decades. We will keep you updated with any changes in this agreement. If you have any queries about this matter, please contact us
